Slow Progress in India’s AI Landscape

India’s advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have lagged behind major players like the U.S., Europe, and China. Compared to these regions, only a handful of Indian startups have been successful in launching AI models, primarily focusing on large language or voice models. To stimulate the growth of AI in the country, the Indian government has initiated the India AI Mission, a significant $1.2 billion initiative designed to promote AI development. This mission not only provides resources but also allows selected startups to access subsidized GPU computing power in exchange for publicly releasing their models.

Avataar AI’s Innovative Video Model: Varya

Among the 12 startups selected to be a part of the India AI Mission is Avataar AI, which has introduced an advanced video model named Varya. This model is designed to be contextually aware of local customs, such as different festivals, cuisines, and regional attire. Avataar AI, backed by Peak XV, specializes in developing video tools tailored for e-commerce, enabling businesses to create content that resonates with local consumers.

Interestingly, Varya was not developed entirely from scratch. The team built upon the foundation set by Alibaba’s publicly available video generation model, Wan 2.2. By employing a technique known as distillation, Avataar AI effectively compressed Wan 2.2’s capabilities into a more streamlined version. This optimized model can generate video content in just four steps, compared to Wan 2.2’s 50. As a result, Varya generates video ten times faster and at a significantly reduced cost.

Impressive Speed and Cost Efficiency

In practical terms, Varya demonstrates remarkable efficiency; it can produce a 5-second 720p video clip in just 45 seconds when running on an NVIDIA H200 GPU. In stark contrast, Wan 2.2 requires a staggering 1,230 seconds to achieve the same result.

The price point for using Varya is another standout feature. The company intends to charge ₹0.48 (approximately $0.005) per second of video on its hosted platform. This is a drastic reduction compared to competitors like Veo, Kling, Luma, and Runway, which typically charge $0.10 or more per second. This represents a roughly 20-fold cost advantage, making Varya an attractive option for mass adoption.

Addressing Cultural Nuances in Video Generation

India is increasingly becoming a video-first market, evidenced by the prevalence of video content in major consumer internet products. With this in mind, Avataar AI recognizes that existing AI video models are often too expensive for widespread use in India. “If video AI is going to effectively reach students, teachers, MSMEs, creators, enterprises, and public services, significant reductions in cost are crucial. Cost is the most significant barrier to AI adoption in India,” noted Rajan Anandan, managing director of Peak XV.

Moreover, image and video generation models frequently overlook cultural nuances, leading to generic or stereotypical outputs—an issue that has garnered attention in industry discussions. To combat this, Avataar AI has employed curated datasets during Varya’s training, enabling the model to recognize subtle cultural distinctions, including variations in food, clothing, architecture, and festivals.

Open Access and Future Prospects

Varya will be made available as an open-weight model on India’s AI Kosh portal, the national repository for publicly accessible AI models and datasets. Alongside Varya’s launch, the accompanying training data will be shared, allowing developers the flexibility to self-host or modify the model to suit their unique needs. Avataar AI is also exploring partnerships with other video tools, including Higgsfield and Adobe Firefly, ensuring comprehensive accessibility for enterprise customers. Additionally, individuals interested in exploring Varya can easily test it out on the company’s website through various text prompts or reference images.

A Shift in India’s AI Strategy

The launch of Varya encapsulates a fundamental shift in India’s AI strategy. Industry specialists have pointed out that instead of attempting to compete with global giants in foundational models, India can carve out a significant niche by focusing on practical applications and a robust developer ecosystem. This shift is dictated by several factors, including slower model development in India compared to its international counterparts, primarily due to limited computing resources and inadequate quality data availability.

The India AI Mission aligns with a broader governmental effort to bridge this gap. Last year, the initiative selected 12 startups, including Avataar AI, to build AI models while providing cost-effective computing resources. Earlier this year, India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined ambitious goals, targeting $200 billion in AI investments by 2028, alongside a commitment to more than double its GPU capacity in the next six months.

Conclusion

As India’s AI landscape continues to evolve, the emergence of innovative solutions like Avataar AI’s Varya signals a promising future. With an emphasis on localized content and cost efficiency, these developments aim to empower a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, businesses, and public services. By focusing on application-driven approaches and cultural relevance, India is poised to become a significant player in the global AI arena, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and comprehensive technological ecosystem.
