Science Corporation implants vision-restoration chip in its inaugural patient with Stargardt disease.

Science Corporation Makes Breakthrough with Vision-Restoring Chip

Max Hodak, the CEO of Science Corporation and a former president and co-founder of Neuralink, recently announced a significant milestone in medical technology at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference. The company has successfully implanted its vision-restoring chip, known as PRIMA, in its first patient suffering from Stargardt disease, a genetic eye disorder that progressively diminishes central vision.

Understanding PRIMA and Its Implications

Hodak emphasized the importance of the retina as part of the central nervous system, explaining that the technology employed by Science Corporation fits into a larger vision of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). “We consider cochlear implants, retinal prostheses, and motor prostheses as different types of BCIs,” Hodak stated. His vision extends BCIs beyond mere computer control; he envisions a world where these technologies can serve a diverse range of medical applications.

Currently, PRIMA is available in Europe for patients who have lost their sight due to geographic atrophy, a severe form of age-related macular degeneration. With the successful trial in Stargardt disease, which remains incurable at present, Science Corporation believes that its approach can be adapted for various ocular diseases.

What is Stargardt Disease?

Stargardt disease primarily affects the outer retina, leading to the gradual degeneration of the eye’s light-sensing cells. While the inner retina—the part responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain—may remain intact, the outer retinal damage results in a central blind spot that enlarges over time. Approximately 150,000 individuals globally have suffered vision loss due to this condition.

Hodak explained how the device works in conjunction with the brain. “Vision is essentially electrical potential, akin to the electrical activity that travels down the optic nerve,” he noted. By effectively stimulating the optic nerve, PRIMA hopes to restore a semblance of vision in patients who have lost it.

Milestone in Patient Trials

The first patient implanted with the PRIMA chip received the device in May as part of an ongoing clinical trial at the Sydney Eye Hospital in Australia. During his initial rehabilitation sessions, the patient demonstrated promising results; he was able to see a letter, and later, even read a complete word.

The implantation process involves a straightforward hour-long procedure where a small chip, measuring just two millimeters by two millimeters, is placed at the back of the eye to replace degenerated photoreceptors. The patient wears specially designed glasses equipped with cameras that transmit real-time images to the chip, which functions similarly to artificial photoreceptors.

Hodak described the viewing experience: “It’s not a wide field of color vision, but rather a patch within their central vision—think of it as looking through a straw. It’s black and white but sharp and high-contrast, enabling users to see a few letters simultaneously.” The next goal for Science Corporation is to enhance the field of view and increase the size of the implant. This will require innovative solutions to accommodate the curvature of the eye and miniaturize the electrodes, inching closer to natural levels of detail.

The Future of BCIs and Neural Engineering

Since its inception in 2021, Science Corporation has aimed to pioneer advanced neural engineering and BCI technologies. Hodak articulated the company’s strategic objective to first validate their methods and ensure a sustainable business model, all while focusing on restoring vision for the visually impaired.

Science Corporation has also laid plans for its BCI technology, which will differ from Neuralink’s approach. Instead of threading devices directly into brain tissue, their sensors will rest on top of the brain within the skull. The company foresees potential applications for monitoring neurological conditions, including assessing brain activity in patients with tumors.

“The first clinical indication we will pursue is a well-known neurodegenerative disease, although we haven’t revealed it publicly yet,” Hodak shared. Moreover, they are exploring capabilities to help stroke victims by establishing connections to deep brain regions, which could facilitate the reconstruction of brain functions—something traditional electrodes cannot achieve.

Longer-Term Vision: Understanding the Brain

Hodak underscored Science Corporation’s long-term ambition to grasp the intricate dynamics of how the brain generates the mind, culminating in the potential creation of engineered brains. He believes BCIs will eventually become essential for many individuals, particularly as people age. “Our focus is not on designing for healthy 40-year-olds,” he pointed out, “but rather for those who may find themselves needing a BCI by 60 or 70.”

The overarching goal is to enhance not just lifespan but also healthspan, allowing people to maintain quality of life throughout their later years. Hodak’s vision reflects a significant shift in how technology is utilized in healthcare, aiming not only to cure ailments but also to improve the overall human experience.

Conclusion

With the promising results from its PRIMA chip trial, Science Corporation stands at the forefront of BCI technology that could redefine the treatment of eye diseases and beyond. As Hodak and his team continue to innovate and explore the vast applications of neural interfaces, the potential for improved quality of life and vision restoration has never seemed more tangible. The future of medical technology looks bright, raising hope for patients with previously untreatable conditions.
