The Rise of Always-On AI Personal Assistants

In recent years, the demand for AI personal assistants has surged, answering the question of how deep-learning models will be utilized in everyday life. This year, startup Instinct quickly gained prominence with its innovative approach, while Meta aggressively promoted its assistant, Muse. In this rapidly evolving landscape, OpenAI has also stepped up, introducing “dots”—its own AI assistant—during its developer day in late September.

OpenAI’s Vision: A Shift in User Interaction

Alexander Embiricos, the head of OpenAI’s enterprise product team, discussed the motivation behind “dots” at TechCrunch Disrupt, emphasizing why many companies are opting for friendly mascots as representations of their complex AI models. He noted a phenomenon of “convergent evolution” among AI assistants, as developers aim to create more intuitive products. By framing these assistants as cohesive entities capable of maintaining a single conversation, they become significantly more user-friendly.

“With dots,” Embiricos explained, “we were aiming to create a more proactive assistant that doesn’t just react to user requests but actively thinks about how to assist you.”

This new assistant is accessible via the ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps, available to Pro tier subscribers starting at $100 a month. Once integrated with your calendar, email, and other tools, “dots” strives to enhance productivity by managing tasks more efficiently.

Functional Capabilities and User Experience

While many functionalities of “dots” could also be achieved using OpenAI’s previous Codex app, which focuses on coding, “dots” requires less user engagement. Embiricos recounted a personal anecdote about his wife keeping her computer on overnight, enabling the assistant to continue optimizing its performance.

Key to their strategy was creating a seamless user experience, reconfiguring the technology to be more approachable. Embiricos mentioned that the naming of the product reflects this intent, with “dots” symbolizing a ubiquitous aspect of modern convenience.

The Importance of Proactivity in AI Assistants

A standout feature of “dots” is its continuously operating nature. OpenAI views this as critical, as it leads to enhanced engagement and higher token usage. The proactive nature means that users don’t need to prompt the assistant; it anticipates needs and provides suggestions for improvement or alerts to conflicts.

However, during initial tests, the response timing wasn’t optimal. For instance, Embiricos recalled a situation where his assistant alerted him to a calendar conflict only three minutes before the scheduled event, showcasing early developmental hurdles.

“I expect that the timing will improve as we refine our product,” he added, highlighting that proactive engagement is fundamental. He shared an example from an engineer at a drone delivery startup, whose assistant had identified an outage and provided actionable insights before the engineer even realized the issue.

Balancing Privacy and Functionality

As with many AI applications, there exists a delicate balance between the personal information necessary for an assistant to function effectively and user privacy. While Meta’s Muse has faced criticism over the detailed profiles it builds of users’ contacts, Embiricos confirmed that “dots” possesses similar capabilities, termed “proactive research.” This feature enables the assistant to analyze user interactions and available data to enhance its suggestions and anticipate future needs.

OpenAI maintains that “dots” adheres to the same privacy protocols as ChatGPT. Users can deactivate model training, preventing the company from using their conversations to improve the model. However, limitations exist; for instance, while users can control what resources the assistant accesses, the app often insists on broader access.

Embiricos acknowledged that granular control is a future goal: “We want to grant users even more detailed privacy controls, while balancing the need for intelligent assistance.”

Challenges of Scaling AI Personal Assistants

The question of whether AI personal assistants can effectively scale is paramount in discussions about their future. While they may provide unique advantages when limited to a small user base, their general acceptance in larger business environments remains in question. Many individuals prefer direct human interaction over engaging with AI agents for professional matters, as highlighted by Embiricos, who stated, “I personally never intend to have a meeting with someone else’s agent.”

For AI to become an integrated part of daily professional interactions, its developers must ensure compatibility with existing infrastructures, such as payment systems, which remains a focal point for OpenAI’s future projects.

The Future of AI Assistants and Consumer Trust

The prospect of allowing an AI assistant to engage in financial transactions raises significant consumer concerns. While granting access to an email inbox is already a considerable leap, allowing access to bank account management could further complicate consumer trust.

Embiricos noted, “At OpenAI, we’re taking our time to ensure that when we introduce new capabilities, we do so in collaboration with the broader ecosystem. We’re already involved in discussions with payment processors.”

Though the journey to fully realized personal AI agents may be fraught with challenges, there’s promise in the ongoing development of technology like “dots.” As AI continues to evolve, the balance between utility, user experience, and privacy will define its role in our lives.

Innovation paired with a customer-centric approach may eventually lead to a seamless integration of AI assistants into everyday routines, transforming how we manage our personal and professional tasks.
