OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT to work seamlessly with specific desktop apps on Mac. In a strategic move, developers can now enable code reading with popular tools like VS Code and Xcode. Instead of manually transferring code snippets to ChatGPT, users can streamline the process. ChatGPT reads code from selected applications, providing suggestions and insights without needing copy-paste actions. This functionality is particularly beneficial for developers seeking quick advice or debugging help on their code sections.

However, this feature does not extend to writing code directly into the applications. While tools like GitHub Copilot can auto-write, ChatGPT focuses on enhancing understanding of existing code. The feature, aptly named ‘Work with Apps‘, leverages MacOS’s Accessibility API to facilitate code reading but is limited to text-based interpretations.

OpenAI’s current focus is coding applications, a popular area for large language models (LLMs). By supporting these applications, ChatGPT is taking a significant step towards interacting with a broader set of desktop tasks. As OpenAI’s desktop product lead Alexander Embiricos states, understanding other apps is critical for developing future AI agents.

Despite its promise, the feature faces challenges. It can’t interpret visual elements, such as images or video formats, because it relies on the MacOS screen reader, which is text-based. Furthermore, specific applications like VS Code require additional extensions to function optimally with ChatGPT. These constraints suggest that while the system can enhance productivity, it remains a work in progress.

The deployment of this feature is currently limited to Plus and Teams subscribers, with plans to extend to Enterprise and Edu users. OpenAI aims to include more app categories, particularly text apps useful for writing tasks. This progression builds towards a future where AI more comprehensively understands and interacts with digital environments beyond simple text scripts.

In a demonstration, ChatGPT successfully completed a project by adding missing code elements within an Xcode setup. However, users must still insert the AI’s output back into their environments, highlighting the system’s collaborative intent rather than full autonomy.
