Established through a substantial $4 billion joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, the company faced significant challenges. Having missed its deadline to launch a driverless robotaxi service in collaboration with Lyft, Motional lost Aptiv as a financial supporter. This prompted Hyundai to infuse an additional $1 billion into the venture, aiming to keep it afloat amidst a difficult landscape.

The company underwent several layoffs, including a drastic 40% restructuring cut in May 2024. This reduced its workforce from a peak of about 1,400 employees to fewer than 600. Meanwhile, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) were reshaping the technological landscape, compelling Motional to reassess its strategies.

Choosing Evolution Over Stagnation

Faced with the option of adaptation or failure, Motional chose to evolve. The company announced a reboot of its robotaxi ambitions, adopting an AI-first strategy for its self-driving technology. They have committed to launching a commercial driverless service in Las Vegas by the end of 2026. A pilot robotaxi service, operated by a human safety driver, has already been initiated for company employees. The difficult decision to pause our commercial activities was necessary for us to speed up our progress.”

Transitioning to an AI-Focused Architecture

This transformative phase signifies a significant shift from a traditional robotics-based approach to one embedded in AI foundational models. Although Motional has always integrated AI—utilizing machine learning models for tasks like perception and tracking—its earlier reliance on more rigid, rules-based systems complicated the overall software architecture.

In a broader context, models designed for language processing began finding applications in robotic systems and autonomous driving technologies. This transformer architecture enabled the development of large, sophisticated AI models, correlated with the rapid rise of tools like ChatGPT.

Motional is now working to amalgamate smaller models into a cohesive architecture, facilitating a streamlined, end-to-end solution. While integrating these models, the company has retained smaller models for developers, allowing greater versatility and adaptability.

“This is critical for two reasons. First, it allows for easier generalization to new cities and varying scenarios. Second, it enables cost optimization,” Major clarified. “For instance, while traffic lights may differ in new cities, you can collect some data, train your model, and operate safely without starting from scratch.”

Testing the Waters: A First-Hand Experience

TechCrunch had the opportunity to experience Motional’s revised approach during a recent 30-minute autonomous drive through the bustling streets of Las Vegas. While one demonstration may not accurately assess the entire self-driving system, it effectively showcases progress and highlights areas for improvement.

As the Hyundai Ioniq 5 navigated from Las Vegas Boulevard into the chaotic drop-off zone of the Aria Hotel, the performance exhibited both strengths and weaknesses. Maneuvering through a plethora of pedestrians, vehicles, and tourist attractions, the autonomous vehicle adeptly navigated around a halted taxi and changing traffic patterns.

Previously, Motional operated a ride-hailing service in Las Vegas in partnership with Lyft, where vehicles autonomously managed segments of a ride. However, navigating crowded areas like parking lots or hotel pickups necessitated constant human oversight to handle immediate challenges.

Addressing Remaining Challenges

Despite Motional’s promising advancements, there are key areas for improvement. The display graphics encountered by passengers are still under development. Furthermore, while there were no disengagements during the test ride—meaning the human safety operator did not need to take control—the vehicle hesitated momentarily while navigating around an Amazon delivery van, showcasing areas for refinement.

Laura Major remains confident that Motional is on the right trajectory towards safe and effective deployment. Hyundai, as the majority stakeholder, is committed for the long haul, further stabilizing Motional’s path forward.

A Vision for the Future: Level 4 Autonomy

Looking ahead, Major articulates a broader vision: “The ultimate goal is to integrate Level 4 autonomy into personal vehicles.” This significant step implies a system capable of managing all driving tasks without human intervention. While robotaxis serve as the initial entry point, Major asserts that any Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) would be keen to incorporate this technology into their vehicle lineup eventually.
