With the explosion of weather and climate data that current tools can’t handle, AI emerges as the future of forecasting. Brightband, a newly funded startup, aims to turn AI forecast models into both a business and an open-source standard.

Existing forecasting techniques rely on outdated statistical and numerical models. While they are not inaccurate, they are inefficient and require supercomputers for weeks. AI, however, can pull patterns from large data sets and predict upcoming events with surprising accuracy.

Julian Green, CEO and co-founder of Brightband, explains that government and weather companies struggle to attract top talent, and tech companies don’t prioritize weather. A startup like Brightband can bring together AI, data, and weather experts to make AI operational and available to everyone.

Brightband’s model, trained on years of weather data, aims to build on existing models and extend their capabilities. Co-founder Daniel Rothenberg notes that AI benefits from these big models, making weather forecasts faster and more accurate.

Green highlights the diverse needs across various industries. Energy companies need to predict renewable energy supply, transportation needs to avoid extreme weather, and agriculture requires long-term planning for activities like seeding and harvesting.

Interestingly, Brightband commits to releasing its models for public use. The aim is to provide the basic forecasting capability as open source, including the data used for training and evaluation metrics. This transparency can significantly improve weather prediction quality.

Rothenberg adds that there is a vast amount of historical weather data currently ignored due to processing difficulties. Utilizing this data can improve AI model accuracy, helping the community better understand the atmosphere on a larger scale.

Brightband collaborates closely with agencies like the National Weather Service, which provides crucial observational data. They aim to continue the international collaboration on weather data to enhance responsiveness and reliability.

Currently, Brightband is in the early stages of product development. While nothing is live yet, they aim to have a model by the end of 2025 that takes in satellite and radar imagery to produce forecasts.

Structured as a public benefit corporation, Brightband’s mission is transparent, attracting $10 million in funding. Despite being a PBC, this structure doesn’t limit profits but ensures the mission is balanced with shareholder interests.

Expect weather-related products before climate-focused ones, with a demonstration planned by the end of the year. Brightband’s Series A round was led by Prelude Ventures, with participation from Starshot Capital, Garage Capital, and others.
