All Hands AI raises 5M to build open source agents for developers
3 min readAll Hands AI has announced a significant milestone, securing $5 million in seed funding led by Menlo Ventures. This investment is a giant leap towards revolutionizing developer tools with open source AI agents.
The funding will allow the company to accelerate the development of model-agnostic AI agents, designed to handle repetitive and mundane tasks for developers, enabling them to focus on more creative aspects of programming.
Transforming Development with AI
Programming is often seen as creative, but daily tasks like writing unit tests and managing dependencies can be repetitive. All Hands AI aims to free developers from these “toil-oriented tasks” with their open source AI agents.
Robert Brennan, co-founder and CEO, noted that AI is excellent at routine tasks, aiming to let developers concentrate on more complex work.
Open Hands: The Proactive Pair Programmer
Initially named OpenDevin, the project rebranded to OpenHands and has gained immense traction on GitHub. The OpenHands agent works as a proactive pair programmer, assisting with day-to-day tasks like test writing and application deployment.
Brennan highlighted that the agent could recognize and manage changes affecting various parts of an application, significantly improving efficiency.
Inspiration from AI Cognition
AI Cognition’s Devin agent, capable of executing complex engineering tasks, inspired All Hands AI.
Brennan and other developers were both amazed and concerned by Devin’s capabilities, sparking the idea for an open source alternative that the developer community could contribute to and own.
The project’s vision crystallized after witnessing the Devin demo, which showcased the potential of AI in development.
Focus on Open Source Community
Joff Redfern, a partner at Menlo Ventures, emphasized the importance of building open source technology for developers, especially in day-to-day tasks.
He believes that All Hands is steering the community towards an ideal AI-powered development experience.
Brennan, along with co-founders Xingyao Wang and Graham Neubig, brings extensive experience in natural language processing and building agents.
Current Challenges and Future Plans
Despite tools like Copilot being beneficial, they don’t cover the entire “agentic loop of writing code.”
All Hands AI aims to create a more comprehensive solution for developers, even if it’s still in the aspirational phase.
Brennan is confident that human developers will remain essential for a long time, despite AI advancements.
User Experience and Integration
There are still unresolved questions about user and developer experiences for such systems. All Hands AI is addressing these early on by having a designer on staff to refine the experience.
The team plans to integrate OpenHands with popular development environments like VS Code.
Monetization Strategy
As with many open source startups, All Hands AI plans to monetize by offering paid, enterprise features that complement their open source offerings.
Brennan believes this approach ensures that the open source project remains sustainable and receives financial support from larger enterprises.
Funding and Next Steps
Besides Menlo Ventures, other investors include Pillar VC, Betaworks, and Rebellion. Angel investors like Thom Wolf and Jeff Hammerbacher also participated.
With this funding, the team aims to enhance its technology stack before diving deeper into monetization.
The $5 million seed funding marks a pivotal moment for All Hands AI, potentially transforming developer workflows with their innovative open source AI agents.
As the company builds out its technology and integrates with popular development tools, the future of AI-assisted development looks promising.
