Sparkli: Revolutionizing Learning for Kids with Generative AI

In recent years, big tech companies and emerging startups have increasingly turned their focus towards developing software and hardware aimed at children. While many of these innovations rely on text or voice interactions, they often fail to engage young users effectively. To address this issue, three former Google employees have created Sparkli, an interactive app powered by generative AI that promises to transform the way kids explore knowledge.

The Founders’ Journey

Sparkli was launched in 2022 by Lax Poojary, Lucie Marchand, and Myn Kang. Their motivation stemmed from their experiences as parents. Poojary and Kang often found themselves unable to satisfy their children’s innate curiosity or provide engaging answers to their many questions. “Kids are inherently curious,” Poojary explained in a conversation with TechCrunch. “For instance, my son would ask me how cars work or how rain forms. I initially attempted to use ChatGPT or Gemini for explanations, but it resulted in a wall of text. Kids crave interactive experiences, and this understanding became the foundation of Sparkli.”

Before founding Sparkli, Poojary and Kang co-created Touring Bird, a travel aggregator, as well as Shoploop, a video-focused social commerce app, both of which were incubated at Google’s Area 120. Marchand, who serves as Sparkli’s CTO, was also among the co-founders of Shoploop and had a successful tenure at Google.

Beyond Traditional Learning Tools

Typically, when a child asks about the appearance of Mars decades ago, the answers have evolved over time: from static pictures to videos, and now, with Sparkli, an interactive and immersive experience. “We want children to interact and genuinely ‘experience’ what Mars is like,” Poojary emphasized.

Recognizing that traditional education systems often lag in teaching modern concepts, Sparkli aims to educate kids in areas such as skills design, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship through AI-driven “expeditions.” The app features predefined topics across various categories and allows users to ask their own questions, creating personalized learning pathways. Each day, Sparkli highlights a new topic, encouraging ongoing exploration and curiosity. Users can choose to listen to the content, read, or engage with a mix of media including audio, video, images, quizzes, and games.

Adaptive Learning Experiences

Generative AI is at the core of Sparkli’s unique offering. All media assets within the app are created dynamically, enabling the platform to generate a tailored learning experience in under two minutes upon a user query. The goal is to reduce this timeframe even further, enhancing user engagement.

To ensure efficacy, Sparkli’s founding team made intentional hiring decisions, including bringing on a PhD holder in educational science and AI, and a qualified teacher. This thoughtful approach prioritizes pedagogy, making sure that the generated content effectively serves children’s learning needs.

Safety and Ethical Considerations

Safety is a paramount concern when it comes to children using AI. Sparkli is aware of controversies surrounding AI tools that have faced legal challenges, such as claims alleging that these technologies encouraged harmful behavior. While Sparkli prohibits discussions around sensitive topics like sexual content, it employs a thoughtful approach for inquiries about self-harm. Instead of providing alarming information, the app aims to foster emotional intelligence and encourages children to discuss their feelings with a trusted adult.

Expanding Reach Through School Partnerships

The startup is currently piloting its app in partnership with a network of schools serving over 100,000 students. Targeting children aged 5 to 12, Sparkli has already undergone testing in more than 20 schools last year. The app has also integrated a teacher module, which allows educators to track students’ progress and assign homework based on the app’s content.

Inspired by successful apps like Duolingo, Sparkli has gamified the learning experience. The app rewards children for their ongoing engagement with streaks and achievements while offering quest cards tailored to the avatars they create. “We have received positive feedback from our school pilots,” Poojary noted. “Teachers frequently use Sparkli to craft expeditions that students explore at the beginning of a class, transforming the classroom into a discussion-based environment. Some educators even use it to assign homework that reinforces their lessons, enabling children to explore further and assess their understanding.”

Upcoming Plans and Funding

Looking ahead, Sparkli plans to primarily work with schools globally for the coming months. However, it is also preparing to open consumer access and allow parents to download the app by mid-2026.

The company has successfully raised $5 million in pre-seed funding, led by the Swiss venture firm Founderful. This investment marks Founderful’s first foray into the edtech sector. Lukas Wender, the founding partner, expressed his enthusiasm for Sparkli, noting that its innovative approach offers a compelling educational alternative to traditional video games. “As a father of two school-going children, I recognize that the current curriculum often overlooks essential topics like financial literacy and tech innovation. Sparkli invites kids to step away from video gaming and engage in immersive learning,” he said.

Conclusion

Sparkli stands at the intersection of technology and education, leveraging generative AI to create captivating learning experiences for children. As its features continue to evolve, the platform aims not only to satisfy children’s curiosity but also to equip them with essential skills for the future. By focusing on interactivity, safety, and educational efficacy, Sparkli is poised to make significant strides in the realm of children’s education. With plans for wider accessibility and impactful features, the future of Sparkli looks promising for the next generation of learners.
