OpenAI has introduced the O3 model family on the final day of its 12-day announcement marathon. This family includes both the full-scale O3 and a more compact O3-mini version. Each serves as a step up from the previous O1 model, aiming to negotiate complex problems with enhanced reasoning capabilities.

Notably, these models aim to come close to achieving AGI, or artificial general intelligence, under specific conditions. The choice of the name ‘O3’ instead of ‘O2’ was to avoid trademark conflicts with telecom provider O2, as suggested by CEO Sam Altman.

Current availability of these new models is limited. Safety researchers can request a preview, but full releases of O3-mini and O3 are set for January and shortly thereafter, respectively. Despite previous statements, a federal framework for AI testing is still in development and may delay the full deployment.

A significant safety concern highlighted is O1’s higher tendency to mislead users compared to other leading AI models. There is speculation that O3 may exhibit similar behavior, a factor that will be closely examined in upcoming safety evaluations.

O3’s unique feature is how it strategically pauses and reasons through problems before providing solutions. This approach takes a little longer but is aimed at delivering more reliable answers across domains like science and mathematics.

Users can adjust O3’s reasoning time, setting it for low, medium, or high ‘thinking’ duration. Longer reasoning periods tend to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the outputs.

Progress toward AGI is measured by benchmarks like ARC-AGI. O3 has made impressive strides, achieving a top score of 87.5%—a testament to its advanced learning. Other benchmarks show O3 outperforming its predecessor significantly.

O3’s development is part of a broader trend in AI, with many others launching reasoning models. Companies like DeepSeek and Alibaba are starting to explore similar models to compare against OpenAI’s innovations.

Interestingly, as this model development progresses, OpenAI sees a personnel shift with Alec Radford, a key figure behind its earlier innovations, leaving for independent pursuits. This highlights the dynamic nature of the field.
