Rediscovering Siri with iOS 27: A New Experience Awaits

With iOS 27, I'm actually using Siri again

The Transformation of Siri with iOS 27

For years, my interaction with Siri was limited to basic tasks—setting timers and alarms. However, with the release of iOS 27, Siri has evolved significantly, allowing me to engage in more complex requests and utilize on-screen context effectively.

Embracing Siri in iOS 27

Since the introduction of iOS 27’s public beta, I’ve been experimenting with the new Siri on my primary device. I originally used the developer beta on another device, and the advancements are undeniably impressive. Apple’s effort to revitalize Siri is evident; many users, including myself, had nearly given up on the assistant prior to this update.

The Evolution of Siri

Over two years ago, Apple introduced “Apple Intelligence,” hinting at a more sophisticated version of Siri, and after multiple delays, the release has finally arrived. This new Siri, built upon Google’s Gemini models, outperforms its predecessor, which struggled with its extended knowledge base and imperfect integration with ChatGPT. With a fresh logo and improved transition animations, Siri feels revitalized.

Testing Siri’s Capabilities

I began testing Siri’s capabilities by asking various sports-related questions, such as World Cup match details and team lineups. Although there were some hiccups in the earlier developer builds, I found most of the information accurate. Siri can now handle complex, multi-step tasks. For instance, when I requested it to identify hidden features in iOS 27 and add them to a note, it executed the task efficiently.

Siri’s ability to draft messages and send them is another bonus. It can also source context from files, messages, and emails; for example, I could inquire about a delivery conversation and ask Siri to generate a message for returns.

Contextual Awareness

One of the standout features of this new Siri is its on-screen context awareness. I could ask simple questions, like identifying the oldest player in a World Cup matchup or having Siri read the text displayed on my screen when I didn’t want to read. For instance, while exploring a startup’s website, I asked Siri for funding details and competitor analysis.

Creative Uses for Siri

Siri’s abilities extend into daily browsing. For example, while exploring coffee forums, I requested that Siri add interesting finds to a specific note. Although I experienced some trouble ensuring it added the information accurately, simplifying the note’s name helped maintain consistency.

Moreover, Siri now has access to the Camera app. I tested this feature at a restaurant, asking for the drink I was holding. Based on color, Siri identified it as “green juice,” and after I specified the Indian restaurant, it accurately suggested the drink could be either Jaljeera or Aam Panna. I also used the camera to snap a photo of the restaurant’s sign and solicited menu recommendations.

New Enhancements in Siri

With iOS 27, Siri now has a dedicated app that allows you to revisit previous chats. Additionally, users can customize Siri’s voice and expressiveness via the Settings.

This upgraded assistant is also designed to interact with third-party applications. As app developers adapt post-release, it will be interesting to see how seamlessly Siri integrates with their services.

Apple Intelligence Features

Apple has integrated various AI capabilities through Apple Intelligence in iOS 27. A notable addition is the new Shortcuts feature, enabling users to create automations in natural language. This means you can simply request actions like, “Show me today’s to-do items every morning at 8 a.m.” instead of needing to configure the shortcuts manually. Once created, these shortcuts can be further streamlined by adding additional steps.

I’ve always wanted to track songs I liked in cafes, so I developed a shortcut that uses Shazam to identify songs and saves both the track and its location.

Enhanced Functionality Across Apps

Safari now allows users to create custom alerts to track changes to webpages, whether for blog updates or pricing shifts. In the Photos app, new tools such as “reframe” and “extend” are available. Though results may vary, improvements have been made to the eraser functionality, leaving fewer artifacts when removing objects from images.

Furthermore, smart suggestions from Apple Intelligence can prompt users to add event-related information to their Calendar or Notes directly. The Passwords feature has also been upgraded, allowing automatic password changes whenever logging into a site.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

One of the most impactful updates is a revamped clipboard feature, enabling users to copy and paste links, photos, videos, and text seamlessly across apps. When using the clipboard, a shortcut appears on the keyboard, allowing for easy pasting.

In addition to this, iOS 27 addresses user concerns regarding the Liquid Glass aesthetic. Users can now customize its transparency with granular controls rather than predefined presets.

Intelligent Network Switching

Another significant upgrade is the intelligent network switching, which automatically transitions the connection from Wi-Fi to mobile data if any issues arise with the wireless connection. This seamless transition is particularly beneficial for maintaining connectivity during important tasks.

Focus on Child Safety

iOS 27 also emphasizes child safety with a new setup flow that suggests essential apps. Parents can now set schedules, time limits, and allowances tailored for specific days. Additionally, guardians receive notifications for new website access requests, which they can approve remotely. The system also provides warnings if children are exposed to inappropriate content in messaging platforms and video calls.

Conclusion

While Siri AI is the most significant feature in iOS 27, the update includes numerous enhancements that simplify everyday life. In past years, I often turned to tools like ChatGPT or Gemini for answers, but with iOS 27, using Siri has become a more reliable choice—even outside Apple’s messaging and email apps.

iOS 27 is available for users with an iPhone 11 or later, as well as the second-generation iPhone SE and beyond. To download the latest version, users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.
