Chris Taylor, CEO of Ode and co-founder of Fractional AI, believes the venture is poised for enormous growth. “If we execute well, it’s easy to envision this as a trillion-dollar company,” he stated in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch. However, he acknowledges the challenge of navigating hyper-growth while maintaining quality.
Currently, Ode employs around 100 engineers who work hand-in-hand with Anthropic’s applied AI team to tailor solutions for specific organizational needs. Ode’s backing private equity firms are set to funnel their portfolio companies into this joint venture, although Ode will extend its services beyond these firms, aiming to serve a broader client base.
Targeting the Right Clients
For Ode, securing clients whose executives are enthusiastic about AI integration is crucial. “The projects we undertake often emerge from the top priorities of a company’s CEO,” Taylor remarked. He emphasized that these projects typically involve enhancing critical product features or revamping essential business processes.
Ode follows a “Claude-first” strategy, primarily deploying Anthropic’s technologies, like Claude Tag in Slack. However, the firm is open to utilizing competing products when advantageous.
The Importance of Quality Implementation
Eddie Siegel, Ode’s chief technologist and another co-founder of Fractional, points out that the company’s strength lies in its quality of implementation and its ability to design custom solutions. “Model selection is significant, but it’s merely one aspect within a well-engineered system,” Siegel asserts. He insists that enterprise transformation shouldn’t hinge solely on the choice between programming languages like Python or Java.
The founders of Ode believe that companies not inherently focused on AI stand to gain the most during this technological revolution—if implemented correctly. Taylor summarized the challenge: effectively adapting AI to transform core business operations necessitates top-tier applied AI talent, which many companies currently lack.

Ode’s team is described as elite generalist software engineers; over half are former founders. These engineers possess the unique ability to tackle complex technical challenges and manage projects from conception to execution. As one Blackstone executive noted, Ode’s engineers function like “grown-up” engineers—the “special forces” of tech talent.
However, the demand for such adept teams far exceeds supply. Ode aspires to expand globally while retaining its boutique service offerings, emphasizing ongoing evaluations to assess the effectiveness of its AI deployments.
Yet, cultivating and maintaining a robust engineering team remains a significant challenge in an industry already experiencing a talent shortage. The question arises: Can Ode sufficiently train enough engineers to meet the escalating demand?
