Blackstone’s Jas Khaira: Concerns about AI-related debt are exaggerated.

Blackstone's Jas Khaira says fears over AI-buildout debt are overblown

Blackstone at the Forefront of the AI Revolution

Blackstone, a heavyweight in private equity, is actively engaging in the AI boom, as discussed by firm veteran Jas Khaira at TechCrunch Disrupt last week. The firm is employing a variety of funding strategies, which include providing significant loans to data centers and investing in cutting-edge AI models and applications.

Launch of Blackstone N1 (BXN1)

Earlier this year, Blackstone launched Blackstone N1 (BXN1), a central hub located in San Francisco aimed at consolidating its AI initiatives. Khaira, who has moved from New York to California, is spearheading this new endeavor. The firm acknowledges that the AI transition requires substantial investment, unlike previous tech cycles like mobile or SaaS, where moderate capital sufficed for companies to scale significantly. With assets under management totaling $1.3 trillion, Blackstone is well-positioned to make a significant impact in this evolving technological landscape.

Differentiation from Traditional Venture Capital

Khaira pointed out that Blackstone distinguishes itself from conventional venture capitalists through its emphasis on compute financing and its capacity to offer flexible capital structures that stretch across both debt and equity. The firm has been strategically aggressive in its investments, claiming to be “the largest owner of compute outside of the hyperscalers,” with stakes in neoclouds and data centers, which it leverages to support various companies.

For instance, BXN1 has been pivotal in numerous compute-related deals, including its commitment of $5 billion to Crux AI—a neocloud developed in collaboration with Google to commercialize its specialized TPUs. Blackstone also collaborated with the four-year-old chip startup, Etched, which has been gaining traction among investors.

Innovative Financing Structures

Blackstone has developed a financing model that assesses both committed customer contracts and uses GPUs as collateral to provide substantial loans to venture-backed neoclouds. The firm’s inaugural deal using this structure took place in 2023 with CoreWeave, a neocloud that witnessed a surge in demand following the release of ChatGPT. Although CoreWeave reported only $30 million in revenue and minimal profitability at the time, the neocloud was able to secure a $2.3 billion loan from Blackstone against its considerable inventory of Nvidia GPUs.

CoreWeave’s relationship with blue-chip clients such as Microsoft made Blackstone more comfortable with the loan. This deal soon evolved into a financing blueprint that Blackstone and other credit institutions utilized to extend billions in subsequent debt to both CoreWeave and its competitors.

Addressing Credit Market Concerns

As Blackstone continued to expand its neocloud financing portfolio, including a $10 billion credit facility for the Australian GPU provider Firmus, Khaira acknowledged that recent weeks have raised concerns regarding the substantial debt profiles held by these companies. CoreWeave’s debt has reportedly escalated to around $50 billion, leading industry figures, such as Altimeter Capital’s Brad Gerstner, to question the sufficiency of CoreWeave’s GPU collateral.

Khaira noted that market anxiety is driven by rising interest rates and inflation, which has led to higher borrowing costs. “We’re also seeing higher credit spreads,” he mentioned, implying that lenders now charge elevated premiums on top of already increased base interest rates to finance the burgeoning AI infrastructure. This trend is affecting not just startups but even established tech giants like Meta and Microsoft, which are facing increased costs of capital.

Stock Market Impact

These concerns have permeated the stock market as well, causing shares of CoreWeave to plummet by over 20% recently. Meanwhile, Firmus opted to cancel its planned IPO on the Australian Securities Exchange, initially targeting a valuation of approximately $30 billion. Khaira pointed out that the market simply wasn’t prepared to support that valuation, reflecting broader uncertainty concerning the fair pricing of neoclouds amidst rising interest rates.

Future Outlook: Demand for Compute

Despite mounting pressures on some infrastructure providers due to high debt levels, the demand for compute power among AI companies continues unabated. This insatiable appetite is propelling ongoing data center development, further indicating a robust future for AI-related investments.

Khaira dismissed fears of a looming credit crisis akin to the 2008 financial scandal, asserting that the current situation does not involve “shaky credits” seen in that era. He emphasized that most datacenters built today cater to hyperscalers and are supported by highly creditworthy companies.

Supporting AI Adoption Through Ode

In addition to financing data centers, Blackstone is actively aiding companies in their AI adoption efforts through a $1.5 billion joint venture called “Ode with Anthropic,” established in collaboration with Anthropic and Hellman & Friedman this year. Ode provides on-ground engineers who assist companies in integrating AI into their operations, starting with Blackstone’s own portfolio of 280 companies.

When questioned about whether Blackstone-owned firms are experiencing significant ROI from AI investments, Khaira acknowledged that while returns are evident, they are “uneven.” He characterized technology adoption as a potentially “sawtooth-type pattern,” where initial oversupply of compute resources might exist until businesses fully assimilate the technology.

Conclusion

Blackstone’s proactive stance in the AI market underscores its commitment to capitalizing on this technological shift. By developing innovative financing structures, investing in critical infrastructure, and aiding firms in adopting AI, Blackstone is not just participating in the AI revolution but is positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping its future. As demand for compute continues to surge, the firm’s strategic approach could pave the way for substantial advancements in AI technologies and applications.
