Exploring World Models: Unveiling the Potential of AI
This week, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel on world models at the All In conference (unrelated to the podcast), diving into one of the most enigmatic sectors of artificial intelligence. Two prominent players in this field are Yann LeCun’s AMI Labs and Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs. Despite their significant hype and funding, both organizations appear to be low on the profit-making radar.
The Essence of World Models
World models fundamentally revolve around automating spatial intelligence. This concept holds immense promise, potentially spurring advancements in diverse areas such as robotics, interactive media, and sophisticated self-driving systems. However, when I began to inquire about the actual commercialization of this technology, the responses grew obscure.
The closest source of insight came from Michael Rabbat, co-founder of AMI Labs and the company’s Vice President of World Models, who participated in the panel. When I pressed him for specifics about what the company is developing, he adopted a cautious tone, stating, “We’ll talk about it when we’re ready to talk about it.” Following up via email, he elaborated, “We’re still in a research and building phase, so we’re not discussing any product plans or timelines publicly.”
The Landscape of Secrecy
AMI is still in its infancy, being less than a year old, which partly explains their restraint. However, this atmosphere of guardedness pervades the entire world-modeling domain. The most developed offering appears to be World Labs’ Marble, which showcases straightforward media creation, environments for video games, and CGI effects. While there are applications in robotics, the platform serves more as a demonstration of capabilities rather than a commercial product.
This secrecy even extends to the companies’s data suppliers. Alex de Vigan, CEO of Physicl—a data supplier in the world model sector—expressed frustration at the lack of transparency. “I wish they would tell us more. We could build more useful data if we knew what they were working on,” he confided.
The Versatility of World Models
Part of the intrigue surrounding world models arises from their inherent versatility. At its simplest, a world model can be visualized as a navigable map, akin to the AI systems utilized in self-driving vehicles. The same techniques that assist a Waymo in navigating through traffic could also enable a humanoid robot to carry items or transform video footage into interactive environments.
AMI Labs has ventured into various sectors, including manufacturing, biomedicine, robotics, and AI applications for healthcare through its partnership with Nabia. While it’s unlikely they will pursue all these areas simultaneously, one or two might stand out as priority focuses.
Commercial Viability and the Competition
There’s no denying the wealth of business opportunities stemming from world model technology. As long as fundraising remains relatively effortless, there’s little urgency to concentrate on just one area of development. In fact, diversifying interests could be advantageous. For instance, if AMI were to announce advancements in humanoid robotics or next-gen rendering systems, it would attract significant interest from rival labs. This could lead to heightened competition not only from other world model companies but also from established players like OpenAI and Anthropic.
This environment exemplifies the complications of easy fundraising. While it enables companies to innovate discreetly, it also equips potential competitors with similar financial resources. Once the commercialization pathways become clearer, this competition is bound to intensify. Therefore, maintaining a veil of secrecy about ongoing projects could be a strategic advantage.
The Dark Forest Scenario
Those familiar with Cixin Liu’s works will recognize this as a classic “dark forest” scenario: when you’re unclear about who else may be prowling in the shadows, it’s wise to remain inconspicuous. This mindset seems to be driving the cautious silence observed in the world-modeling sector.
