Lightspeed Ventures Strengthens AI Strategy in India with New Fund
Lightspeed Ventures is refining its strategy in India, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) by launching a new early-stage fund with a target of $250 million. This initiative reflects the venture firm’s belief that AI technology is poised to catalyze the next generation of startups in one of the largest markets globally.
Investment Background
Based in Silicon Valley, Lightspeed is already a significant player in the AI sector, investing in prominent companies such as Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks. In India, the firm has backed Sarvam AI, a leading developer of large language models that has also been selected by the Indian government to help create sovereign AI models. This strategic positioning gives Lightspeed a robust foundation for exploring AI opportunities in India.
Launch of Lightspeed India Partners V
The new fund, dubbed Lightspeed India Partners V, is set to be half the size of its predecessor, which raised $500 million in 2022. To date, commitments for approximately 80% of the targeted $250 million have already been secured, according to a letter sent to investors that was reviewed by TechCrunch.
In late April, Lightspeed publicly revealed the fund through a U.S. regulatory filing; however, the filing did not disclose the target amount. Earlier reports from Indian media indicated that the firm was initially looking to raise between $300 million and $350 million.
Investment Timeline and Structure
Lightspeed intends to start deploying capital from the new fund within two months, structured for an investment period of about two and a half years. Until that timeline, the firm will finalize investments from its existing fund to ensure a smooth transition.
For the first time, Lightspeed is aligning its India funds with the broader global fundraising cycle. This significant shift intends to synchronize the regional operations, established nearly two decades ago, with its global counterpart.
Competitive Landscape
Lightspeed’s move comes on the heels of rival firm Accel, which recently raised a $550 million India fund alongside new funds for the U.S. and Europe as part of a comprehensive $3.5 billion fundraising campaign. This coordinated effort marked the first time Accel raised funds for all four initiatives simultaneously.
Lightspeed’s $250 million fund is tailored to fit its current investment pace and shorter investment horizon. The firm has suggested that a smaller fund size will allow for a more concentrated focus on individual deals rather than solely on the overall fund, enabling them to raise their next fund more quickly.
Focus on AI Investment Thesis
This new fund also underscores a heightened emphasis on AI in Lightspeed’s early-stage investment strategy. The investment thesis, as articulated in the communication with investors, posits that AI will potentially yield more value in India than the internet, with the fund aiming to identify AI-driven startups across India and Southeast Asia.
Despite India not yet producing any major frontier AI model developers globally, the investment landscape is gaining traction. Indian stakeholders increasingly recognize opportunities within the application layer, leveraging the country’s large pool of software developers and its long-standing status as a technology services hub.
Lightspeed’s Overall Capital Landscape
The newly announced $250 million India fund represents only a fraction of the capital available within Lightspeed’s expansive global framework. The firm manages assets exceeding $65 billion worldwide, having raised $9 billion across various new funds last December, marking its largest fundraising achievement to date. This total included a $980 million early-stage venture fund.
While the dedicated India and Southeast Asia funds constitute a part of Lightspeed’s regional investments, the firm has also deployed approximately $900 million from these funds. Additionally, Lightspeed’s global funds have injected another $1.6 billion into companies within its regional portfolio, further illustrating the firm’s commitment to the area.
A Specialized Focus on AI
The decision to channel the latest regional fund exclusively toward AI signifies a more concentrated thematic approach for Lightspeed as it continues to diversify its portfolio historically spread across multiple sectors in India. The firm’s investments have included quick-commerce ventures like Zepto, audio platforms such as Pocket FM, and various enterprises in sectors like solar energy and household services.
The management team responsible for Lightspeed’s previous four India funds will helm the new fund, ensuring continuity and experience in leading this focused investment strategy.
In conclusion, Lightspeed’s strategic pivot towards AI investment in India highlights the growing importance of this technology in shaping the future of startups and innovation. As the firm gears up to make its mark in this dynamic market, it is poised to identify and nurture the next wave of pioneering companies leveraging AI. With its significant backing and targeted approach, Lightspeed is well-positioned to play a crucial role in India’s evolving landscape of technology and entrepreneurship.
