The Rise of AI in the Smartphone Industry

AI has emerged as a crucial battleground in the smartphone industry, with manufacturers striving to integrate AI features to captivate mainstream audiences. In contrast, Vertu, a luxury phone maker founded in the UK, takes a different approach. Known for its handcrafted devices often priced in the tens of thousands, Vertu focuses more on status than specifications. Their latest offering, the Alphafold, is a foldable phone specifically designed for affluent consumers, particularly executives, combining luxurious materials with an AI agent aimed at streamlining their workday.

Testing the Vertu Alphafold

To assess Vertu’s claims, I tested the Alphafold over several days, utilizing it in the manner the brand envisions for its target demographic. Instead of concentrating on benchmarks, camera capabilities, or media consumption—which are typical focal points for smartphone reviews—I engaged in tasks such as managing documents, analyzing spreadsheets and contracts, planning business trips, and automating routine activities using its AI assistant throughout my workday. The key question was not just whether it functions as a smartphone, but whether it serves as an executive’s smartphone.

What Makes the Alphafold Unique?

At the core of the Alphafold lies the Hermes Agent, a pre-installed AI system built on an open-source foundation. This agent can analyze documents, automate applications, remember conversations, and delegate tasks to a human concierge as needed. Unlike conventional smartphone AI assistants that typically follow direct prompts, Hermes is engineered to manage complex workflows, positioning it as the centerpiece of Vertu’s marketing narrative.

Luxury Aesthetics

Priced starting at $6,880, the Alphafold presents itself as a premium device. My review unit featured genuine calfskin leather and titanium accents, distinguishing it from mainstream foldables that primarily use glass or synthetic finishes. Its design is undoubtedly aimed at consumers who view their smartphone as both a functional tool and a status symbol.

Comparatively, the Alphafold feels noticeably heavier at 264 grams compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, which weighs 215 grams. While the additional weight is noticeable during prolonged use, it doesn’t hinder usability, and the Alphafold’s curved design makes it easier to unfold than the flatter edges of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Packaging and Build Quality

The Alphafold arrives in packaging that mimics a jewelry case more than a smartphone box, featuring neatly arranged drawers for bundled accessories, including a leather sleeve and charging cables. This reinforces the impression that Vertu is selling a luxury experience rather than merely a phone.

Beneath its luxurious exterior, however, the Alphafold shares notable similarities with the ZTE Nubia Fold in terms of hinge design, dimensions, and component placements. Vertu acknowledged that their device was developed through a partnership with ZTE/Nubia, which raises questions about the uniqueness of its offerings.

Emphasizing the AI Advantage

While many may focus on hardware specifications, Vertu’s essential pitch lies in whether executives will invest in an AI-driven smartphone that enhances their productivity. During my testing, I replaced common prompts with authentic executive tasks, analyzing spreadsheets, managing schedules, and automating app interactions.

What stood out was Hermes’ capability to analyze files and automate actions more efficiently than other AI assistants, although this autonomy sometimes came at the cost of accuracy. For instance, when I instructed the Hermes Agent to manage an airport pickup, it sent a message but set the reminder for the wrong time. In contrast, Samsung’s Gemini assistant was less autonomous but confirmed details to ensure accurate execution.

Planning Business Trips

I tested Hermes further by asking it to organize a business trip, including a flight and hotel recommendations. The AI acknowledged the unavailability of direct flights but fell short by suggesting contact with Vertu’s concierge service instead of providing alternatives. Samsung’s Gemini, on the other hand, suggested alternative travel options without escalating the request, demonstrating a more comprehensive approach.

Document Management

Both Hermes Agent and Gemini were tasked with analyzing financial spreadsheets. Hermes initially succeeded in summarizing the data but later failed to recognize previously uploaded files, which highlighted a limitation in its memory retention. In contrast, Gemini required uploads but continually retained contextual awareness of previous interactions, allowing for ongoing inquiries without re-uploading documents.

AI Limits and Future Potential

The testing suggests that Hermes Agent is still an evolving platform rather than a fully realized assistant. Although its willingness to act autonomously offers a sense of capability, this occasionally led to incomplete or inaccurate workflows. Vertu appears to be dedicated to improving Hermes, indicating it could offer a different user experience in the coming months.

Beyond basic tasks, Hermes also includes specialized AI features targeted at affluent professionals, offering services related to legal and financial advice, while still giving users the option to escalate requests to human concierges for further assistance. This combination positions the Alphafold as more than a mere smartphone, aimed at delivering a complete executive workflow.

Security Concerns

Security is paramount for executives managing sensitive data. Vertu assures users that conversations with Hermes Agent are encrypted and that users can choose where their data is processed. Additionally, the device includes a dedicated “A5” security chip, which claims to offer hardware-level protection. While the assertions cannot be independently verified, they are crucial for Vertu’s pitch to security-conscious professionals.

Daily Use and Functionality

While the Alphafold operates effectively as a flagship foldable, its battery life exceeds a day, a commendable feature. However, the lack of wireless charging at this price point, particularly compared to Samsung’s offerings, stands out as a surprising omission.

The camera includes a document scanning mode, adding practical functionality for executive tasks but not offering a unique advantage over existing models.

Conclusion

The Vertu Alphafold represents an ambitious attempt to create a luxury smartphone led by AI but struggles to justify its premium price. Though the device’s materials and branding convey exclusivity, the core features and performance are not substantially better than those found in much cheaper alternatives. The Hermes Agent, while promising, still requires refinement to be a true game-changer.

In the end, Vertu is asking consumers to pay a significant premium for branding, craftsmanship, and an AI ecosystem built on an established platform. Given the competitiveness of the market, especially with upcoming models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Alphafold’s value proposition seems increasingly challenging to defend.
