The Rise of AI Awareness: Workshops Helping Users Take Control

“Everyone’s glued to their phones at my program!” quipped Charlie Bailey, a South Philadelphia librarian, as he welcomed attendees to his workshop on disabling AI features like Apple Intelligence and Gemini. Despite the vibrant children’s classroom setting, complete with a colorful rug, the 20 adults present were there to engage in the “Avoiding AI” workshop—far removed from any alphabet lessons.

Frustration with AI Adoption

Bailey’s inspiration for this workshop stemmed from a growing sense of frustration surrounding the pervasive influence of AI technologies in everyday life. “People feel overwhelmed by AI tools that seem to appear out of nowhere, often feeling compelled to use them without a choice,” he told TechCrunch.

The hour-long session commenced with Bailey explaining the fundamentals of AI chatbots and consumer AI tools—why individuals might gravitate towards them or choose to avoid them entirely. He meticulously guided the attendees through various tech platforms, offering step-by-step instructions projected on a screen to help them disable unwanted features.

“As a librarian, facilitating this kind of digital literacy is vital,” Bailey remarked. “It empowers people to reclaim their autonomy over technology that can often feel obligatory.”

Inspiration from Fellow Librarians

The “Avoiding AI” workshop concept was sparked by Maine librarian Hannah Cyrus. After she published a journal article on her own workshop, Bailey and numerous other librarians reached out for guidance. “This engagement has been unprecedented,” Cyrus commented to TechCrunch. “No one’s ever asked me for slides from a basic course before.”

At the Bangor Public Library, Cyrus observed a rise in queries about AI tools—questions like, “How do I turn this off?” and “Why is it rewriting my emails?” Recognizing a need, she decided to educate patrons about the underlying technology in a way that would empower them to make informed decisions.

Her initial “Avoiding AI” workshop garnered so much interest that she had to cap registrations at 30 and set up a waitlist, eventually reaching around 70 attendees through a Zoom livestream.

The Popularity of AI Workshops

Inspired by Cyrus, Bailey hosted a workshop in Philadelphia with similarly enthusiastic responses. His library’s Instagram announcement about the “Avoiding AI” event drew over 2,000 likes and 220 shares—numbers that drastically outshone typical posts. Due to overwhelming registration for the inaugural session, Bailey quickly organized a follow-up.

“It’s encouraging to see skepticism toward AI,” Bailey noted. “Understanding that many people share these concerns feels reassuring.”

Attendees shared a palpable sense of camaraderie, exchanging tips on minimizing AI’s influence in their lives. One participant highlighted a trick to hide AI-generated results during Google searches, demonstrating the collaborative spirit of the gathering.

Perspectives on AI in Everyday Life

The workshop highlighted the broader anxieties surrounding AI in daily life. One participant, Johnny, articulated the fear of unwanted data centers appearing near homes, while Gabrielle expressed frustration with AI at work, stating, “I keep getting AI shoved down my throat.” Yet, she recognized the technology’s potential, especially in fields like medicine. “I’m not against AI in terms of medical breakthroughs,” she clarified.

Cyrus acknowledged that the anti-AI sentiment among attendees isn’t about rejecting technology outright. Rather, it’s a call for more agency and control. “The forced integration of AI into daily life might be the tipping point for many,” she remarked. “People are becoming increasingly aware of the disproportionate influence these technologies and their creators have over our lives.”

Reclaiming Digital Autonomy

Bailey and Cyrus underscore the importance of digital autonomy. Workshops such as “Avoiding AI” serve as platforms to educate individuals about potential pitfalls and to promote a healthy skepticism towards pervasive technologies. As more people become aware of the implications of AI integration, they seek to regain control over their digital experiences.

Cyrus shared how tools like optical character recognition have practical applications in libraries, highlighting that the anti-AI movement is nuanced. “It’s not about discarding technology entirely; it’s about advocating for responsible consumption of it,” she explained.

The Growing Movement Against AI Overreach

As the trend towards AI concerns continues to grow, the “Avoiding AI” initiative illustrates an evolving landscape in which people are not simply passive consumers of technology but rather active participants in shaping their digital environments.

To conclude, the emergence of workshops aimed at empowering users to manage their interactions with AI tools showcases a collective desire for more autonomy in a technology-driven world. Programs like Bailey’s and Cyrus’s offer vital resources for individuals eager to navigate the complexities of the modern digital landscape, ensuring that they make choices aligned with their values and preferences.

In a time where the influence of AI seems ever-present, the message is clear: understanding technology and maintaining control over it is not just a luxury—it’s essential.
