Poke’s Exciting Acquisition by Cognition
Poke, the AI assistant that users engage with like a friend, is taking significant strides in the tech landscape by being acquired by Cognition, an AI coding startup. The deal, valued in the low nine figures, aims to harness the unique interaction model and personality of Poke to enhance Cognition’s coding assistant, Devin.
Enhancing User Experience
What distinguishes Poke from other AI tools is its conversational approach. Instead of coming off as a traditional software utility, Poke interacts with users in a friendly, approachable manner, often incorporating slang and humor into its responses. This unique engagement model could significantly enrich the user experience of Devin, making it more relatable and enjoyable.
Marvin von Hagen, co-founder of The Interaction Company of California, elaborated on the importance of personality in AI interactions in a TechCrunch interview. “You probably prefer it if you have co-workers that have personality, rather than if you have co-workers that are just robots,” he explained. “When co-workers are also software engineers, they can make jokes, which adds a layer of enjoyment to the work environment.”
The Value of Interaction
The acquisition emphasizes a growing trend in the AI sector—the belief that the way AI assistants communicate with users is as vital as their underlying functionalities. Cognition is focused on transforming Devin so that it feels less like a piece of software and more like a collaborative colleague.
Scott Wu, co-founder of Cognition, noted the affection users have for Poke, describing it as “proactive, knowing, and fun to talk to.” He expressed enthusiasm about integrating such qualities into Devin, thereby enhancing both platforms.
A Versatile Assistant
Launched in March 2026, Poke allows users to interact with its capabilities through various messaging platforms, including iMessage, SMS, Telegram, and WhatsApp in select regions. Its diverse functionality spans categories such as travel, health, finance, scheduling, and education. Von Hagen identified productivity tasks—like managing emails, reminders, and to-dos—as the most common use cases for Poke.
Over the last three months, Poke has facilitated over 100 million messages, demonstrating its widespread adoption among users. However, despite this success, von Hagen acknowledged the operational costs of running Poke have made profitability challenging.
Strategic Developments
In June, Poke achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first AI agent approved for Apple’s Messages for Business platform, enabling businesses to streamline customer communications within Apple’s ecosystem.
As for the immediate future, Poke aims to maintain its position on Apple’s platform without any major changes for the remainder of the year. However, next year promises experimentation with both Poke and Devin, utilizing Cognition’s latest software engineering model, SWE-1.7, for improved efficiency.
A full integration of the two products hasn’t been ruled out, as von Hagen sees potential in Poke orchestrating various coding tasks managed by Devin. He noted that while Devin currently handles one pull request at a time, a collaborative framework involving Poke could allow for multiple tasks and greater persistence across different user sessions.
The Future of Poke and Devin
In conclusion, the acquisition of The Interaction Company by Cognition holds exciting prospects for both Poke and Devin. As AI technology evolves, enhancing user interaction through more personalized communication can significantly impact user satisfaction and productivity. With Poke’s conversational style and Devin’s coding prowess, the collaboration aims to create a more engaging and effective AI assistant experience.
The journey is just beginning for both platforms, and with their combined strengths, the future looks promising for users seeking not just tools, but collaborative partners in their daily tasks.
