AGI is here, in my opinion. ASI will be rapidly achieved with the development of hybrid quantum and classical computer architecture. This will profoundly decrease the amount of energy needed for compute. Elon is deploying an array of data centers in space that will be quantum upgradable. These morons investing in the outrageously large data centers here on earth will regret their investment.

LLMs as we know them, is System 1 thinking. Will make up and go along with whatever narrative comes to mind most of the time. Very narrow grounding.
That is the left hemisphere of the brain. The Split-Brain experiments of the 1960s-80s proves it.
The right hemisphere is System 2 reasoning. It's non-verbal but grounds the logic of the left brain, overriding the narrative the left half came up with and correcting it to make the final decisions.
The split-brain experiments even showed the 2 halves can even get into fights trying to complete the same task differently with their respectively controlled hands actively slapping each other to try and take control for example.
I'm pretty optimistic. GPT 3 was four years ago, and every 6 months or so, there was a step up in quality. Chips, Energy, Distilled Models, Agentic Systems — all of them seem to be moving forward.

Interesting discussion, but I still think the AGI definition is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. "Median human across most cognitive tasks" sounds neat on paper, but the average human can walk into a strange house, figure out why the hot water isn't working, change the thermostat valve on a 30-year-old gas boiler, and adapt when the job doesn't match the manual.
Until an AI can reliably handle that kind of messy, physical, real-world problem solving, calling it AGI feels premature. Right now we're measuring intelligence mostly inside a computer. Humans live in the world, and the world is where things get complicated.
Based on your definition, AGI is already here, we are at borderline ASI… Don't believe me? Go to Walmart and ask anyone a question, then ask AI the same question. Who do you think is right? All of this is getting increasingly fascinating and concerning, perhaps even terrifying. Though we absolutely should not progress blindly without care and concern for human survival, maybe a far bigger, cosmic perspective for those feeling intense dread is in order. This won't end that dread, but again, it might add a larger cosmic perspective on what's happening.
It is completely understandable to find this terrifying – the idea of human intelligence possibly being overtaken by artificial intelligence of our own design, possibly becoming a threat to our survival. It triggers our deepest survival instincts. But if we take a step back and look at the trajectory of life, our technological advancement can be viewed as a natural continuation of evolution.
At its core, evolution is rooted in the drive to adapt and survive. The basic loop of higher level survival – assessing a situation, reasoning, planning, and acting – is something the human brain was happenstantially biologically engineered to process to keep us alive in a harsh universe.
However, it is a hard truth to consider that humanity might not be the final endpoint of this evolutionary march. Intelligence is a continuous spectrum, stretching from random but rule-based interacting chemicals to DNA, to the reasoning human brain, and now toward AGI, possibly on then to ASI and beyond. From the cosmic perspective, if we humans are eventually surpassed, the human story will still remain indelibly written into the cosmic record as the crucial epoch when the universe better learned to comprehend and manipulate itself toward facilitating even exponentially greater ability to continue this process of evolution. We achieved this profound capability millions to possibly even billions of years ahead of other earthly species, and we may be the only lifeform in the universe with this capability. We were handed the baton of biological evolution of the universe's self-understanding and self-utilization. If indeed we humans are merely part of the survivability relay, we have and are currently continuing to run our leg of the relay beautifully – we have survived. Not only have we survived, but further now, just as biological evolution of survivability has been accelerating since the start, we are now possibly shifting and preparing to pass the baton as the primary course and conduit of evolution to an even more robust and profoundly accelerating technological evolution and continuance of the universe's growth in self-awareness, understanding, reasoning, utilization, and creativity.
It's a tough pill for sure, but though we don't know exactly how or why, … the appearance of DNA on this planet in our solar system's closed ecosystem solidified existence here as a survival-of-the-fittest game. This impetus for survival-of-the-fittest is even theorized by some physicists and philosophers as potentially stretching back far before the advent of DNA, back even possibly "before" the dawn of our universe. Stepping outside of our universe then and looking in, we might see that the vague blueprint for the evolution from proto star to planet formation to random rule-based chemical interactions to emergence of DNA to biological intelligence to "artificial" general intelligence to beyond was there in the nature of existence all along.
For now, have hope… haha… we're not done yet. We have opportunity to do this… to persuade nature, via our intelligence, reasoning, and creativity.. . that we are worthy of evolving with and carrying the baton with a next-level intelligence that is increasingly looking like an inevitable emergence for many factors already built into our humanity, chiefly: survivability – ever higher, faster (artificial) intelligence is the competitive advantage that no one seems willing to let go of… even if it kills us… the fittest will survive. You mention everything being cured like take super AI, but even with current models research shows that in 10 years all disease will be eradicated, and they found the cure for aging, its in Alpha testing in humans, and worked in moneys and rats, what they said is theres a bottleneck, your perscribing that bottleneck being those issues, when thats not what they are saying, they are saying that at whatever light speed computation is, that would be a cap, but we are nowhere near that, be like .000001% our computation power currently.
Something like that would find cure for everything like a few seconds. It would run every sequence using some massive quantum computer.
